DI: LUCIANA GESUALDO Osservarli faceva sempre un certo effetto, così uniti nel loro legame di sangue. Nonostante il significativo distacco generazionale sembravano amici. La visuale di Villa Doria Pamphili si confaceva al meglio alla loro confidenzialità piuttosto che la vista storico artistica della città, nei punti in cui si aveva come l’impressione di dominarla ed abbracciarla in tutta la sua magnificenza. Nonno e nipote sedevano tutti i pomeriggi, al tramonto, alla panchina di mezzo. Li si intravedeva in lontananza mentre percorrevano a piedi, lentamente, il viale alberato che costeggia le giostre per bambini. L’anziano signore, ricurvo dal peso degli anni, soleva appoggiarsi al braccio del giovane e fiero nipote, il quale era felice di discorrere con lui, di essere un valido supporto ed un utile sprone a non adagiarsi ad una vita segregata. Sorridevano e ridevano, complici di una sintonia tale da far invidia a chiunque. Ogni tanto facevano una piccola sosta per guardarsi negli occhi, per poi riprendere la via che li portava al loro consueto appuntamento. Da bambino Federico era solito frequentare il Gianicolo con i suoi familiari e ad accompagnarlo c’era sempre nonno Franco che lo portava a vedere il teatrino delle marionette. Solo dopo molto tempo gli confidò che queste non erano animate, così come sembrava, ma manipolate da un burattinaio che si celava dietro di esse per far ridere il suo pubblico di ingenui e teneri fanciulli, i quali avevano l’aria di divertirsi con molto poco. Quando Federico seppe che Pulcinella, Arlecchino e tutti gli altri prendevano vita grazie ad un umano ne rimase colpito, come quando gli confessarono che Babbo Natale non era mai esistito. Si infranse un sogno, s’interruppe una fantasia e la ragione, come sempre accade dopo l’età della fanciullezza, finì per prendere il sopravvento, stroncando l’immaginario. Egli volle allora dare un volto a colui che si nascondeva dentro il teatrino mobile, regalando al prossimo solo il suono della sua voce. Chi potesse essere quello strano personaggio finì poi per scoprirlo, poiché si mise in testa di aspettare la fine degli spettacolini e il deflusso della folla fino al momento dell’uscita dell’attore protagonista che amava recitare dietro le quinte. Era un uomo piuttosto basso e calvo. Sarà stato il suo essere paffuto a renderlo simpatico. Aveva un sorriso che sapeva trasmettere una certa serenità e che si sposava bene con quel luogo frequentato da bimbi, turisti, giovani ed anziani, ma perlopiù da innamorati, amanti e sposini i quali esprimevano il loro sogno d’amore in una cornice romantica e suggestiva. Nonno Franco amava ripetere la storia di Garibaldi talmente tante volte che a scuola Federico non dovette mai studiarla per quanto l’aveva memorizzata bene. Il generale patriota era entrato nel suo cuore, così come tutti gli eroi che avevano combattuto al suo fianco, molti dei quali erano riusciti a guadagnarsi quanto meno un mezzo busto marmoreo per aver mostrato onore e coraggio. Una buona consolazione se si pensa che solitamente è solo il prode condottiero a trovare spazio nella memoria dei tempi. Molti dei Mille, invece, ebbero il privilegio di rimanere altrettanto vivi nella storia, al punto tale che ancora oggi sembra che qualcuno, nel fissare i volti scolpiti, arrivi a farli rivivere. Una giovane donna che non riuscì mai a trovare l’amore finì addirittura per innamorarsi di uno di questi, o meglio del suo ricordo, trattasi di un certo Oreste Tiburzi. Ne rimase incantata dal coraggio, dal valore e dal senso di appartenenza al popolo italiano, caratteristiche che cozzavano di gran lunga con gli uomini con i quali nella quotidianità era venuta a stretto contatto. Aveva finito per amare l’amore immaginario che sognava ripercorrendo la storia di un grande uomo, un eroe di tutti i tempi che, disgraziatamente, non faceva parte della sua epoca e che era troppo tardi per conoscere di persona. Un forte senso di patriottismo aveva colpito anche nonno Franco il quale aveva più volte immaginato di poter salire a cavallo con Garibaldi. Più volte aveva confessato a suo nipote di voler arrivare lassù e sedere dietro al condottiero, dominando con lui la città dall’alto, un sogno che Federico non aveva mai dimenticato e che si apprestava a trasformare in realtà. Mancavano pochi giorni agli ottanta anni di suo nonno e questa volta aveva in mente di stupirlo con effetti speciali, regalandogli l’impossibile. Fu così che programmò nel dettaglio il suo compleanno. Cominciò a richiedere una serie di permessi alla soprintendenza dei beni archeologici, al Comune di Roma, al municipio di competenza, per organizzare il tutto. Non avrebbe mai potuto immaginare di trovare tanta collaborazione da parte delle istituzioni che, seppur strozzate dalla morsa della burocrazia, si erano mostrate compiacenti e partecipative a realizzare una sorpresa senza precedenti. La data fatidica si apprestava sempre di più e Federico riuscì a mettere insieme i pezzi di un grande puzzle e ad ottenere ciò che si era prefissato. Quella mattina di fine estate prese un giorno di ferie dal lavoro. Aveva bisogno di tempo. La gru sarebbe arrivata verso le 19.00, un’ora dopo di loro. Era ancora giorno a quell’ora ed il tramonto rappresentava una componente non poco rilevante. Al posto del burattinaio dispose un grande palcoscenico, tutto intorno gazebo allestiti a buffet, camerieri abbigliati di bianco e fiori multicolori. Come sempre andò a prendere nonno Franco chiedendogli stavolta di vestirsi particolarmente bene. Non che le altre volte non lo facesse, ma per l’occasione, senza sapere dove lo portasse, si mise un completo blu notte molto elegante al punto tale da sembrare un principe azzurro avanti con l’età. Quel giorno appariva addirittura meno ricurvo e la felicità della sorpresa che lo attendeva aveva finito per renderlo persino più giovane. Quando arrivarono al Gianicolo Federico lo condusse dalla parte opposta rispetto a quella ove solevano trascorrere i loro incontri. Nonno Franco non capì che tutto quel trambusto era per lui, ma pensò di essere capitato nel bel mezzo di qualche manifestazione pubblica. Fu solo in un secondo momento che realizzò il tutto e se ne commosse, abbracciando il nipote gonfio di gratitudine ed affetto. Al suo compleanno furono invitati i pochi amici rimasti in vita. A questi si aggiunsero parenti e conoscenti e persone che si trovavano lì per caso. Fu una grande festa, piena di regali da scartare, emozioni da vivere, cose da ricordare. In quell’occasione il cannone scandì le 19.00 e nonno Franco ne rimase molto colpito. Cosa preannunciava tale sparo? Inaspettatamente una grande gru si diresse al suo cospetto e un uomo di colore, alto e forzuto lo invitò a salire su di una pedana con le sbarre che aveva la sembianza di un piccolo balcone. Solo in quel momento il festeggiato suppose cosa lo aspettasse. Tremante si lasciò condurre sempre più in alto, fino a raggiungere il suo eroe, sorretto dal nipote tra gli applausi, i fischi e le grida di gioia e stupore. Riuscirono a farlo sedere in sella al cavallo, proteggendolo con esagerata precauzione. Furono tanti a scattare foto in quella occasione. Una in particolare lo ritraeva felice mentre con una mano cingeva la vita del condottiero e con l’altra quella del nipote. Fu proprio questa immagine a volere come ricordo della sua trascorsa esistenza.
