Sono tanti giorni oramai che la mia povera zia è ricoverata in una clinica, della quale non faccio ancora il nome, per la riabilitazione dopo la rottura del femore.
Il reparto di geriatria di questa struttura in particolar modo dà l’idea di un pre obitorio dove gli anziani e sfortunati sono immobilizzati al letto, privi di speranze e solo se collaborativi, ossia in grado di intendere e di volere, vengono alzati per fare qualche esercizio fisico o quanto meno per passare dal letto alla sedia a rotelle e cambiare aria. Chi è affetto da demenza senile non ha chance. La degenza è prevista per un tot di giorni dopo i quali ognuno deve tornare a casa propria, con o senza famiglia, con o senza badanti, con o senza soldi, ma soprattutto con o senza recupero fisico.
Ogni volta che accedo a quella che ho definito la clinica degli orrori, non per l’estetica della struttura, ma per il personale impiegato, provo una profonda tristezza ed auguro a me stessa di non arrivare ad una certa età. Per i più vecchi, infatti, ci si adopera di meno perché è solo questione di tempo, perché si fa quel che si può, perché rappresentano un costo sociale elevato, perché danno fastidio, si lamentano, si sporcano e sporcano, piangono spesso, fanno i capricci, proprio come i bambini. L’unica cosa che in realtà li differisce da questi ultimi è il fatto che i piccoli sono in entrata e gli anziani in uscita. Per i primi c’è speranza, per i secondi rassegnazione.
Che tristezza vedere tutti quei volti sconsolati, abbattuti, inermi. Che effetto mi fa quando tutte le vecchiette, tra le quali nascono gelosie, ti chiamano al loro capezzale per avere un po’ di attenzioni o semplicemente per avere un pasto servito, quando i parenti non possono far loro visita. Ti prendono la mano, parlano, raccontano del passato, piangono o ti guardano solamente e tu non puoi nulla di niente. C’ è una signora nella stanza di mia zia che da anni è paralizzata ed incosciente, ossia ha sempre gli occhi semichiusi e non parla. L’unica cosa che fa è apre la bocca e deglutisce, oppure se le fai qualche carezza hai come l’impressione che la percepisca.
L’impotenza: questo si prova in posti del genere. Sembrano realtà talmente diverse da quella che conduciamo che si ha come l’impressione che la vecchiaia non ci possa riguardare o che sia talmente distante da doverci pensare a momento debito e non angosciarsi inutilmente. Mi sono fermata a pensare a cosa significhi essere inchiodato ad un letto, dipendere dagli altri, essere cambiati e lavati, pur se riservati, non disporre del proprio corpo, della propria intimità e mi sono angustiata all’idea.
Andiamo al sodo della questione, ossia ai maltrattamenti perpetrati nei riguardi delle povere pazienti di questa clinica, prime fra tutte la mia povera zia di 94 anni di età. Senza scendere nel particolare, umiliata e con i lacrimoni agli occhi ci ha raccontato di essere stata legata ai polsi per evitare che facesse danni igienici e si sporcasse ed è stata riempita di insulti perché occupava il tempo delle infermiere nell’operazione di pulizia del corpo. Quando ho sentito questa notizia ho perso il lume della ragione. In queste circostanze possono accadere due cose: o rimango zitta e faccio parlare altri, per evitare di trascendere poiché non sono in grado di comunicare in maniera civile dinanzi a certe cose, oppure vado oltre e scateno una bufera con tale aggressività da non riconoscere me stessa. In questo caso ho optato per la prima opzione ed a fare giustizia sono stati altri, ma dentro provo un certo tipo di rancore nei riguardi di coloro che se la prendono con gli anziani, con i bambini e con gli animali. Non credo che, cristianamente parlando, io possa provare un minimo di pietà per chi prevarica senza scrupoli chi non ha la possibilità di difendersi. Mi sono messa più volte nei panni delle infermiere che passano i giorni a cambiare gli anziani, a sopportare odori, situazioni scomode e posso comprenderne la stanchezza e soprattutto la pazienza. Per prima ammetterei di non essere in grado di svolgere questo tipo di lavoro. Ho pensato che non tutti fanno ciò che vorrebbero fare, che gli spazzini non hanno l’aspirazione per l’immondizia, ma che i soldi a casa si devono portare per forza. Capisco tutto, comprendo tutto, ma quando si arriva a fare del male, ad insultare chi è già mortificato di suo, chi vive in una condizione che non ha scelto, allora non ci sto, non ci sto per niente e mi riservo di agire in maniera più incisiva delle parole se solo un’altra sola volta sento un racconto del genere!
Sono sempre stata dell’idea che ciò che uno fa gli ritorna sempre, nel bene o nel male.
In questo posto dove si respira un odore di mela cotta, medicinali e minestra scaldata si sente maggiormente l’essenza della vita e si istaurano dei rapporti familiari con perfetti sconosciuti perché ad unire è il dolore, la disgrazia. Ci si interessa l’uno al familiare dell’altro e ci si saluta. Si è solidali più che mai, ci si copre e protegge, come dovrebbe essere ovunque e come così non è. Come mi piacerebbe avere una bacchetta magica ed alleviare, guarire o concludere il dolore altrui.
